Hello,
My last name is McCall. I'm American, but curious about the source
of the name McCall. I have been told that McCall, because it is spelled
Mc and not Mac is Irish. I have also been informed that however it
is spelled, it is Scots. Yet, in my research, I've never seen a clan McCall.
I understand there are clans within clans, but how would I go about finding
which clan the McCall's were part of, if they were?
Thanks in advance,
MJ McCall
It's Scotch-Irish which means they came over from Ireland and had their roots in Scotland so they settled in Ireland for many years then came to the U.S.

I know you ask this a long long time ago but I figure I might as well add what I know anyway.
I also bear the name McCall and have over the years tried to figure out where it originated from time to time.
Basically what I've gathered is that nowadays it is predominantly seen in Scotland and is mostly associated either with Scottish ancestry or the scotch-irish.
The scotch-irish as far as I've read are protestants from scotland who settled (encouraged by the English) in Ulster around the 17th century.
Problem for me is that my great grandparents were from Ireland and they were catholic. So, I discovered that the McCalls are also associated with the kingdom of DalRiada which had territory in both northern Ireland in what is now the county of Antrim and western scotland. Essentially, they controlled the seas between Ireland and Scotland at about the 5th to 7th century AD. And since there wasn't a concept of nation states at the time they where neither Scottish nor Irish, they were Dalriadans the descendants of which eventually either became Scottish or Irish depending on what kingdoms they ended up living in after their ancestors kingdom faded away.

Many of the MacColls that came from Scotland in the early 1600s were Catholics or Presbyterian. The reason they were forced out of Scotland was because they were not Anglican. They were aloud to keep their faith in Ireland, but were under the legal oversight of the Anglican Church. Later MacColl became Spelled more Irish McCall, as did many other Scottish Surnames. Clan McCall, MacColl, etc... is a Sept of Clan Donald or visa versa sepending on who's telling the story.

Thanks for posting. McCall is the maiden name of my grandmother on my dad's side. So, while I don't have any answers, I appreciate your post.

The answer to your question is sort of yes lol. McCall, which my grandmother was, is a Scottish name, usually seen as originating in the Western Highlands and Syke. The area is often referred to as Argyle. A prominent branch of the clan moved to Northern Ireland and then came to America before the Revolution. It has traditionally been considered a sept of Clan Donald, but has in recent years formed a independent clan identity in the U.S. I hope this helps!

I know irish and scoti are same people, so it really both. Like discover my family from co Cavan and McCabe and McCall and McGowan and Smith are very common. The scoti would travel all over British isle before the romans and would settle in Northern Ireland and would go to Scotland and biter marry with Picts who just as Scottish. So their pretty much interchange able.
